I&J MFG Cover Crop Rollers

The Cover Crop Roller Crimper was developed by the Rodale Institute to increase weed control for organic production. By utilizing the roller crimper farmers are able to terminate many cover crops without the use of chemicals while also increasing weed suppression. The chevron pattern allows the roller to move smoothly across the field without bouncing. This provides almost 100% control of the plants by crimping the stalks and preventing the flow nutrients. The roller is most effective when the plants switch to reproductive stage. Growers are now starting to plant their soybeans before the cereal rye is ready to crimp, waiting two to three weeks and then coming in and rolling after emergence of the soybeans.

By utilizing the roller crimper on operations farmers are reducing their dependence on chemicals and thus increasing their bottom line. Crimping cover crops is the next step in the soil health movement for several reasons, decrease chemical usage, increase biological weed suppression, help minimize elongation of the soybean plant by not leaving any plants standing making the soybean plant it is competing for sun light, and create a more compact dense residue mat.

These rollers are able to have an additional 75 pounds per lineal foot added by the addition of water to the drum. It is important to make sure you drain the drum at the end of the season. I&J mfg. Also offer replacement blades that bolt on to your roller after years of service have taken place. For farmers that want to chop the crop we also offer bolt on sharpened blades that will cut the plants instead of crimping them.

Roller Crimper is available from 3’ in width to as wide as you can provide a frame. 15.5’ 3 point and 30’ pull type are our most popular models and the 3 point mount versions can be front or rear mounted.
